About BY Roads
BY Roads classes are free and take 9-10 weeks to complete. All sessions are offered at a variety of locations. The class teaches skills needed to work for highway and road construction companies.
With a mix of classroom and onsite hands-on learning, students learn:
- Highway Construction Safety
- Hand and Power Tools
- Heavy Equipment Identification
- Skid Steer Machine Operation
- Construction Math
- Communcations
- And more!
Graduates earn four industry certificates:
- NCCER Core
- OSHA 10
- McAllister/CAT Skid Steer Operation
- ATSSA Flagger
Construction industry employers visit classes and share information. The last day of class is always a job fair with construction industry employers who are hiring.
BY Roads is offered in partnership with the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT).
NOTE: BY Roads students must have valid driver’s licenses.

Craft Laborer
Often an entry-level position for new entrants to the industry, laborers get hands-on experience that touch a number of different crafts, offering potential career specializations.
